Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil Review

32 oz Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil I’d heard Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Organic Coconut Oil is special stuff from a few friends and wanted to check it out for myself, but found the price prohibitive. Lucky me, I’m a blogger and can review it on our blog! As an added bonus, we’ve got a quart of it to give away at the end of this blog post so you can try it out, too!

This is expensive stuff and I didn’t know if it was worth it. I can get organic coconut oil for 1/3 the price of Gold Label. What makes it so much more expensive?

According to the Tropical Traditions website, their Gold Label is made the same way people in the Philippines have been making it for thousands of years. By hand from fresh coconuts. Both the refined and the expeller pressed coconut oil available in stores are made by machine from dried coconut. The refined is bleached and deodorized. If you read our blog, you know that we don’t believe in bleaching or deodorizing!

Nutritionally speaking, though, what makes the Gold Label different? According to an article published in The International Journal of Food Science, coconut oil made in the traditional way had greater antioxidant capacity than refined coconut oil. In other words, Gold Label neutralizes those nasty free radicals better than other coconut oils.

Here’s a video that sums up what I’ve covered so far. It’s a bit cheesy, but the footage of the farmers and the workers making the coconut oil is worth it.

Alright, so the ethics and science behind Gold Label are legit. Real people make it and it’s got more antioxidant properties than regular coconut oil. Ethics and science aren’t the only reasons behind eating something, though. What does it taste like?

Side by Side Comparison of Expeller Pressed and Gold Label Coconut Oils

I opened the quart jar up when it arrived and was immediately struck by the aromatic, almost perfumey, coconut scent. The other coconut oils we’ve tried have smelled like coconut, sure, but not in such a pungent way. I couldn’t decide at first if I like the scent or not. I’m still a little on the fence. I’m both drawn to and slightly nose crinkly about it.

In the picture, you can see the difference between expeller pressed (which is not deodorized or bleached) and Gold Label coconut oil. On top, the Gold Label is a creamy white, not stark white like the expeller pressed coconut oil. The Gold Label coconut oil has a buttery mouth feel, more like ghee than oil. It tastes more buttery, too, and spreads like butter. Overall, I like it better.

My verdict? This is the best quality coconut oil I’ve tried. It’s produced ethically in the most traditional way. Whether or not the added cost is worth it is up to you, because it is expensive. But you get what you pay for!
