3 Year Update

Kid2 Climbing Rocks

Our family went gluten free in November 2010, completely removed gluten from our lives January 1 2011, and started the GAPS Intro in February 2011. Now that we’re transitioning off GAPS, I figured it’s time for an update!

So… has it worked? Did the diet cure all that ails us? Have we perfectly stuck to it all this time? Was it worth it?

Let’s take it one family member at a time.

I’ll start with our now-13 year old. We decided to change our diet because our son was hospitalized with joint problems we hoped … Continue reading 3 Year Update!

Starting GAPS in the New Year?

Three years ago at the New Year, TinyHands and I completely de-glutened our kitchen and got serious about prepping for GAPS. 3 years later, our changes have stuck for the most part!

We’re still 100% gluten-free, and we mostly stick to the GAPS Full Diet. We have healed enough that we can make exceptions when we want to without problems!

If you want to try GAPS, here are some things to do to make sure you’ll have a good experience and be able to stick with it.

Read the Book

It’s heavy reading, but if you … Continue reading Starting GAPS in the New Year?

The Way to Go - Get a Squatty Potty!

The bamboo squatty potty, heels down position.

As a frugal type, I scoffed when I first heard of the Squatty Potty.

The bamboo Squatty Potty is attractive and works in a small space.

It wasn’t that squatting to poo is a bad idea. If you’ve ever taken care of a toddler, you know that’s the natural way to go. If you’ve given it a try as an adult, you know it unkinks your innards and makes everything easier.

No, it wasn’t the health benefits I was scoffing at. It was the idea of spending money on something I didn’t really need.

After all, if I wanted … Continue reading The Way to Go – Get a Squatty Potty!

Here Come the Holidays!

Kid2 in the Leaves

Hi there, it’s been a while!

Kid2 in the Leaves

Our family has been transitioning off GAPS a little bit here and there, we moved to Salem, OR, and there has been so much to write that I’ve just… not written anything.

But the winter holidays are upon us again and if we want to stay healthy to enjoy them, that means a recommitment to not getting our guts completely out of whack!

Here are some posts from past years to give you inspiration on dealing with the emotional and practical sides of staying healthy and happy through the … Continue reading Here Come the Holidays!

Lauren's GAPS Success!

Lauren's Family

Like our family, Lauren’s family was suffering from many ongoing health issues which have been dramatically helped by GAPS!

Lauren’s Family

She recently shared a 4 part presentation on the GAPS diet, which I’ve included below. Here is what she has to say about it:

My name is Lauren from Mindful Mama, and I am super excited to present to you today a 1 hour video overview of the GAPS program. I recently presented this to a group of people interested in GAPS and have had very positive feedback. My hope is that it will be an encouragement to those … Continue reading Lauren’s GAPS Success!

My Papa's Miraculous Recovery

My papa surrounded by kids, full of energy

My 60 year old papa lives as a full time missionary in Jamaica. This summer he suddenly got very sick with a mystery ailment that brought him back to the states for a couple months while he tried to figure out what was wrong and how to heal.

My papa surrounded by kids, full of energy

The vibrant, charismatic, physically active man who loved to walk the streets for miles and show off his martial arts skills was gone. He could barely move, had trouble staying awake or asleep, and was in constant, intense pain. After being tested for everything … Continue reading My Papa’s Miraculous Recovery

Emergency Cupcakes & GAPS Cheats FTW

Chocolate Cupcakes fresh from the oven

On Friday night Kid1 reminded me that she was supposed to be leaving for a birthday slumber party in one short hour. Normally when the kids are going to a party, especially and overnight one, I try to pack something special and in line with what the other kids will be having.

Chocolate Cupcakes fresh from the oven

There was no time to shop or do much cooking, I didn’t have any treats on hand, and we were all out of our quick & portable high protein favorites like beef jerky. Fortunately we had dozens of eggs on hand … Continue reading Emergency Cupcakes & GAPS Cheats FTW

Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth

A New IBS Solution

By now you know all about how important it is to have a healthy balance of gut flora. But what you may not know is that all that life needs to be in the right place! It’s not enough to have good bacteria thriving in there… it needs to be where it belongs, and your small intestine is not it. Several underlying problems work together or alone to create the conditions for SIBO. A few of the red flags that can point to SIBO include unexplained anemia (low ferritin), constipation that gets worse with fiber in the diet, and celiac patients that don’t feel better (or even get worse) even though they are 100% gluten-free, and the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. … Continue reading Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth

Mental Mondays #9 - Recognizing Behaviors & Physical Changes

I’ve repeatedly alluded to the importance of recognizing the signs that your mood is shifting early on. While there are plenty of tip-offs in our thinking, our bodies play a role, too. Once you start paying attention, you’ll start being able to see physical signs that your mood is about to change before it happens. That gives you a chance to start taking steps to protect yourself and others from your messed up mental state before it happens. You may even be able to minimize the duration and intensity of your mental symptoms if you catch them right away.

Common … Continue reading Mental Mondays #9 – Recognizing Behaviors & Physical Changes
