Sloppy Joes, Hold the Bun

Take some meat and smother it in a sweet sauce and Kid2 will proclaim it the best food he has ever tasted. It was with that in mind that TinyHands decided to make Sloppy Joes a couple weeks ago. Lo and behold, it was a huge success. After that I couldn’t get a moment’s peace. Several times a day, at least, I got requests for Sloppy Joes. Finally, I gave it a try, to the family’s delight!

It turns out they are a great way to use up scorched tomato sauce – it added a “smokey” flavor. (That’s another story… last summer held a few misadventures in canning.) Most recipes include brown sugar and ketchup, but of course we made ours GAPS legal. We could probably have come up with some sort of bun, but we don’t miss buns any more. It went great over roasted cauliflower.

Sloppy Joes


  • 2 lbs ground beef
  • 1/2 pint (or a little more) tomato sauce (we used the recipe for All-Purpose Tomato Sauce from Canning For A New Generation)
  • 1 (scant) Tbsp raw honey
  • 1 onion
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • red pepper flakes to taste
  • real salt to taste (2 tsp?)


  1. Put your ground beef in a large skillet and cook over medium high, stirring regularly
  2. Dice the onion, crush the garlic, and add them to the beef
  3. When the onion is starting to look translucent, add the sauce, honey, pepper flakes, and salt and simmer until the flavors have blended and the consistency is what you are looking for. Taste and adjust the proportions of tomato sauce and seasonings if you like.
  4. Serve it up!

You can dice up other veggies and add them to the mix! Bell peppers are a good choice.
